My generally leftist sympathies notwithstanding, I’ve always been something of a skeptic about global warming. Even in the case that O NOES WE”RE ALL GONNA DIE-DIE, I figure that it’s already too late to save ourselves from whatever’s going to happen (the Canadian hydrogen guy whose interview I linked to a couple of weeks ago thinks mankind is already d00med, but that we...

why is Henry Kissinger still alive, anyway? I mean, besides the old adage about only the good dying young.

We got ourselves a Roomba for xmas (not an HDTV, because at the moment the digital tier on our cable system is hosed so much of the time that it’s not clear whether we’re keeping it, or switching to satellite). We also got one for my 76-year-old mother-in-law. It does seem to do a good job of cleaning the carpet, but I was unimpressed to discover that there is essentially no algorithm...

appearing in my GMail inbox this morning: “The truth is that many people set rules to keep from making decisions.” - Mike Krzyzewski this happens to closely mirror the opinion I have developed regarding religion vis-à-vis moral decisions in general. If you can blame your behavior on a scriptural mandate, you are supposedly absolved of personal responsibility for the consequences of...

if I lived in a place where there were lots of places to go, it might be cool to have one of these. as it is, though, I can count the number of roads I drive on a regular basis on one hand.

There are a couple of defense contractors trying to recruit game developers to come to Alabama. I don’t know whether they’re competing for a contract yet to be awarded, or what, but the product seems to be the Army’s game for recruiting future IED fodder. in case any of you know any paranoid right-wing game programmers. salaries are high here, and the cost of living still...

Intergraph Corporation headquarters, Huntsville, lunchtime today. iPhone camera. that thing out there that looks like God’s middle finger is a fountain. I don’t know where the reddish tinge comes from; there isn’t anything out there even remotely that color. Probably some noise in the red channel? I hope there are new camera feature goodies in the offing for upcoming firmware...

I wonder what’s in the OEOB that the White House doesn’t want us to see.
hillary evidently wants to be president badly enough that she doesn’t mind kicking the other guy in the balls. this kind of shit could possibly motivate me to vote for, say, Romney. Or McCain. The last goddamn thing we need is another fucking Karl Rove.

I have given a little thought to shifting my output away from LiveJournal, a la mrbalihai. I hesitate to do so because it is likely to decimate what little audience I have. It occurs to me that others may be of similar sentiment. It further occurs to me that collective republication in the form of an RSS feed, again a lamrbalihai but with multiple players, would be self-sustaining and almost...
While I’m not as generally pessimistic about the future of mankind as is catbear, I am currently of the opinion that the USA in particular is likely to descend into a Dickensian nightmare within the next ten years. There Are Those Who Say This Has Already Happened.

phase 1, operation wal-mart: MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.
My wife, reading the News Courier, reminds me that today is the 60th birthday of the transistor. Here’s to Moore’s Law.
Bush talks about going on the wagon 20 years ago. Personally, I wish he’d kept drinking, and quit dropping acid.

ok, this isn’t a research paper, I’ll cite and link if somebody wants to see citing and linkage. so, like, New Orleans isn’t a big container port. But Houston is. And considering that you can get used shipping containers for ~$1500 these days, shouldn’t somebody be doing more of this, rather than hauling pathetic, formaldehyde-precursor-laden single-wides down from...
spent a while this afternoon running rough numbers on fuel efficiency. Anyone who’s been paying attention (which leaves me out, explaining why I’m playing calculator calisthenics) shouldn’t be surprised by the results: consumer retail prices per joule of raw energy content are surprisingly close to being equal for gasoline, LP gas, and electricity - between 35 and 45 cents per...
@ardgedee: is anyone even still running MT? Perl is so last week.

Everyone knows that Atlanta has some of the worst traffic in the nation. But not many are aware that Atlanta’s traffic density (traffic volume per square mile) is below average, and lower than that of Fort Wayne, Ind. (an urban area smaller than Augusta). strange, I was just bitching about the traffic in Fort Wayne the other day.
